Fatty Liver Disease & Diet
The liver is the second largest organ in our body, responsible for processing everything we eat and drink, and filtering harmful substances from the blood. Continued damage to the liver can lead to liver scarring (cirrhosis), liver cancer and inflammation (steatohepatitis). There are several types of liver diseases, the most common being alcohol fatty liver disease (ALD), alcoholic cirrhosis, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). These diseases are more likely if you’re overweight, have type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and high cholesterol.
Regardless of the type of fatty liver disease you have, improving your diet will be the most effective treatment along with medicine advised by your doctor. A low fat, reduced calorie diet focussing on building your lean muscle mass, including antioxidants and anti-inflammatory high fibre foods will help reverse your fatty liver disease.
