Pelvic Exam
A pelvic examination is a thorough check of a woman’s pelvic organs. It helps the doctor see the size and position of the vagina, cervix, uterus, vulva, fallopian tubes, and ovaries. The entire procedure takes 10 minutes and is not painful.
Who should have a Pelvic Exam?
Women over the age of 21 should have an annual pelvic exam, unless other health concerns require it earlier.
Why is it important?
- Check for vaginal infections (yeast infections or bacterial vaginosis)
- Diagnosis and treatment of any sexually transmitted infections (STIs), such as chlamydia, herpes, gonorrhoea, trichomoniasis, or human papillomavirus (HPV)
- Protection against infertility
- Find the cause of any abnormal uterine bleeding
- Look for problems like uterine fibroids, ovarian cysts, or uterine prolapse
- Before a doctor prescribes birth control medicine
